. PE 2000 Electoral College Computer Analysis
by JAMES R WHITSON < james@presidentelect.org> >
updated November 3, 2000
... .
President Elect's final computer analysis of the 2000 presidential race predicts that if the election were held now, Republican candidate George W. Bush would defeat Democratic candidate Al Gore. According to the computer, which takes into account current poll data, past elections, and state voting tendencies, Bush would win 284 electoral votes from 32 states, while Gore would win 254 electoral votes from 18 states and DC. In addition, almost all of Bush's electoral votes are safe, while most of Gore's are not. If "close call" states are not included, the count is Bush: 213, Gore: 95, toss ups: 230. For more information about this analysis, see the article More about the Electoral College computer analysisopen link in new window.

PE 2000 Analysis

The table below is the actual computer output. The "score" column determines which candidate is projected to win the state. A negative number means Bush is projected; a positive number means Gore is projected. The closer the score is to zero the slimmer the lead. If a score is within 400 points of zero, the state is considered a "close call" and could easily be plucked away by the other candidate. If a score is over 2400 points from zero, the state is considered a "lost cause" and virtually impossible for the other candidate to win.

Please be aware that polling data can shift from day to day and that this race has a few days left. Earlier electoral vote count analyses are listed at the end of the page.
